Is left 'right' on nuclear deal?
Posted : Sunday, August 19, 2007 By : Kish Kapoor

The 123 Agreement deal with US is getting murkier day by day. Left is vehemently opposing the deal while the rest like BJP are adding fuel to the fire.

It is true that this is a matter of energy security for India on which it cannot compromise on. But like we know that there are no free lunches, this deal would also come with a rider.  However, when we at personal level are always bargaining for our interests why not two sovereign nations? Instead, what we need to ensure is that the agreement should not become a threat to our national security or should put us on financial burden at later stage.

If our interests are taken care of and we are not signing the deal just to please USA or any other nation, there is no reason for worry. However the government should not hesitate from debate - if USA can have the Congress vote for deal, why not India. The issue is a matter of largest and oldest democracy and we need to go through representatives of people and get their consent for the good of democracy.
