It is highly shocking, startling and disheartening to note from a section of the press that a slew of vicious attacks have been perpetrated unabated on the Indian students studying in Australia for the last one year culminating in stabbing to death of an Indian student by name Nitin Garg, 21 years old, in Melbourne (Australia) on Saturday the 2nd instant and yet in another case of ghastly act—a partly burnt body of a 25 years old Indian was found in Australia’s New South Wales on Tuesday the 5th instant.
When Indian Government has taken up the matter with Australia, the latter stated that it cannot be attributed to racial attacks and that they would find a lasting solution to these ghastly acts. But, shockingly, it is more than a year since these attacks are being carried out unabatedly without any let up at all, Australian Govt. failed miserably to contain this menace. In other words, it only goes to show the complacence and indifferent attitude of Australian Government, to the untold miseries, our students are subjected to.
If the attacks are not racial, what they could be? And what kind of enmity could be there between the Indian students and Australian locals. In India, parents of these students are subjected to utmost anxiety and tension, not to talk of the plight of the parents of Nitin Garg, who is no more and the 25 year old boy, who was found half-burnt.
I strongly feel that the above attacks are certainly racial and nothing else though Australian Government has been denying this fact. At a time when the plight of the Indian students in Australia is precarious, our Indian Government is still soft-pedalling over this by not taking up the matter with UNO. It is high time that Indian Govt. realized the gravity, intensity and magnitude of the situation and took appropriate measures on war footing to save the Indian students there from being subjected to further onslaught.
It may be noted here that Officials of Australia’s various Universities have been camping in our country every year and are enrolling our students in their Universities, thereby making a roaring business and our students are not going on their own to study there, which they should realize and find an immediate and lasting solution for this racial menace by lodging their protest with their Government, which they do not seem to have done so far.
