MF Husain's Loss
Posted : Friday, March 05, 2010 By : Manoj Shah

Recently, a lot has been written in the print media after Maqbool Fida Husain accepted the citizenship of Qatar last week. M. F. Husain had said some time ago that 'India was the country where he was born and no one can stop him from coming here'. I am surprised at Husain's decision which maybe due to his age he might have taken this decision to remain in exile. Our Home Minister P. Chidambaram's assurance that Husain is welcome to India and he will be provided with security did not convince Husain to come to India.

I am not supporting any outfit who had raised Anti-Husain slogans for his nude paintings of Hindu Godesses but I would like to ask all those favouring Husain as to what would have been their reactions had Husain painted nude forms of Paigambar, Mother Mary, Jews God's and other religion’s Gods? Any artist who has gained fame does not have the right to show disrespect to feelings of other religions. Art should not defy the limits of decency and sentiments of any section of the society.

Even if he had apologised to the citizens of India for his paintings, he would not have had to run away from the arm of law and Indian citizenship. But he chose not to apologise which was his undoing. It is most unfortunate for Husain to have had to leave his country of birth for his so called principles. I pity his decision.
